“How often should I replace my sponge?” It’s a question we’re often asked. After all, even the tools we use to clean need a little care themselves.

Rinsing your sponges, removing any residue and letting them dry after each use helps keep them in good condition. Sooner or later, though, they need replacing. For your washing-up sponge, roughly every two weeks is a useful rule of thumb. For other sponges, the key is to keep an eye on their condition as you use them.

How often should you replace your washing-up sponge?

Your washing-up sponge needs checking particularly often: it’s constantly exposed to water and food particles, which can become trapped in its fibres.

After each use, rinse it thoroughly, remove any food residue and squeeze out excess water. Then leave it to dry in a well-ventilated spot instead of leaving it wet at the bottom of the sink. Always use separate sponges for dishes and other surfaces.

If the product is dishwasher-safe, you can also put it in the dishwasher, following the instructions on the packaging. This is one of the tips we share in our article on how to clean your sponge. Remember, though, that cleaning it is no substitute for replacing it regularly.

When should you replace it before the two weeks are up? Look out for these signs:

  • An unpleasant smell that lingers after washing.
  • Scouring fibres that are worn or starting to come loose.
  • Dark spots.
  • A sponge that stays damp for a long time or loses its texture.

Don’t wait until it’s falling apart to get a new one.

How often should you replace your bathroom cleaning sponge?

There’s no single replacement schedule that applies to every sponge used on bathroom surfaces. How long it lasts depends on the material, how often you use it and how well it dries between uses.

After each clean, rinse the sponge, squeeze out excess water and leave it in a well-ventilated place. Replace it if you notice unpleasant smells, dark spots or signs of wear. Always keep bathroom sponges separate from kitchen sponges.

What about your shower sponge? That needs to be considered separately, as you use it on your body. Rinse it after every use, let it dry completely and replace it if it develops an unpleasant smell or loses its texture. Check the packaging for care instructions specific to your product.

Natural or synthetic sponges: do they last equally long?

How often you need to replace a sponge can also depend on its material. Natural and synthetic sponges have different structures, properties and drying times, but both can accumulate residue and microorganisms.

Rather than assuming all sponges have the same lifespan, follow the manufacturer’s instructions and check your sponge’s condition regularly.
